Introduction
An illustrated, up-to-date Catalogue of Palaearctic Hyperini (Curculionidae: Hyperinae)

This catalogue presents my personal on-line, illustrated, up-to-date Catalogue of Palaearctic Hyperini.

From the beginning of my studies on Hyperini I felt the lack of catalogues of species that would help me with the orientation of the taxonomy of the group, but also with the distribution and/or the biology of the species. Unfortunately, the last comprehensive taxonomic revision of the tribe Hyperini was published more than one hundred years ago (Petri 1901). Moreover, in the Palaearctic catalogue of Csiki (1934) there are so many inaccuracies that it seems better to follow the earlier revision.

The weevils of the tribe Hyperini did not attract the attention of specialists for a long time, with the exception of a few descriptions, studies of synonymy and information about pests such as Hypera postica (Gyllenhal, 1813). It is an interesting question as to why specialists avoided this group – when I chose the tribe Hyperini at the beginning of my weevil studies I was told ‘God be with you☺’. In conclusion, there is much uncertainty about species in the group, many of which are not common or numerous (with the exception of a few common species, of course).

The outstanding exception in the 20th century was V. Zaslavskij, who was interested very intensively in this group, and not only in taxonomy. In his most important paper (Zaslavskij 1959) he divide the tribe into four groups. I have to say that I had many problems at the beginning of my studies in understading and accepting his results (and I am not alone). For a long time I was unable to understand the meaning of each character. My next problem was the absence of material in European museums, with the exception of Russia ☺. An important shift in my opinion came from my visit to St. Petersburg’s museum, where Zaslavskij’s collection is housed. Not everybody has had the chance to study the type material in the museums and so not everybody has had the opportunity to get to the heart of the matter in each group. I have had, and continue to have, this opportunity and want to use it not only to increase my own knowledge but to give it to others.

For a long time I thought it necessary to start to compile well arranged on-line databases – not only for myself but for interested people and specialists in this group. The main incentive for the creation of my catalogue was provided by the first part of La Charançon: Catalogues and Keys, and the final impulse came with the close cooperation with my colleagues in the CURCULIO-Institut and solved some taxonomic problems within the tribe Hyperini (Skuhrovec 2008).

This catalogue is dedicated to all those who have helped me, and also to those who have provided support, but especially to my friend and teacher in Hyperini, Herbert Winkelmann.
