The Curculio-Institute e.V. (CURCI, registered association) - Center for Studies on European / Palearctic Curculionoidea - is the only European institution attending solely to the taxonomy, biology and ecology of Curculionoidea (Coleoptera). The CURCI serves the research and protection of weevils and their host plants. It particularly supports all efforts of conservation of weevil habitats in European countries.
The scientists of CURCI cooperate with governmental and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) all over the world. The most important purpose is the publication of the annual research report WEEVIL NEWS: Studies on taxonomy, biology and ecology of Curculionoidea. It is also of great significance for us to organize cooperation, integration and scientific exchange between members of CURCI, representatives of neighbouring subject areas and entomologically interested laypersons. The members of the CURCI are organized in permanent study groups (e. g. study group Bagous, study group Hyperini). A type collection of all species described in the former SNUDEBILLER and now WEEVIL NEWS is being established. A presentation of the entire type material kept in the collection of CURCI is documented on the internet. Therefore the CURCI coordinates the planning and undertaking of study trips, activities and projects for scientists and amateurs.
Those, who agree with the aims of CURCI are required to join our institute! For members of the CURCI the WEEVIL NEWS and the presentation of their own projects and ideas on our homepage is free. Nowadays controversal discussions on central themes of entomology are still marked by national self-interest. Because of this the international linking-up of all (West-) Palearctic weevil specialists is a matter of concern for the institute. In the end boundless cooperation and exchange of information is in the interest of all colleagues!
Board of the Curculio Institute
The new board of the Curculio Institute was elected during the general meeting in Oct 2019 and expanded from 2 to 3 people. The constituent meeting should be combined with the first board meeting, but then, for known reasons, it was delayed until October 2020. Finally the meeting could be carried out on 8th Oct 2020, just in time before a subsequent lockdown, in the Natural History Museum in Basel with the kind support and invitation of Christoph Germann.
